Hockey: It’s awesome. And it’s just like working in PR.

When it comes to watching sports, my sport of choice isn’t basketball, baseball or football (gasp!), its hockey. In fact, I think PR is closely related to the game of hockey. It’s fast-paced, team-oriented and we all have days when it takes the whole team to meet our goal.

I realize that being a hockey fan in Texas is rough.  First of all,  no one around will ever go with you to a hockey game because “That’s for Canadians.”  That isn’t true! Although they may be die-hard fans up north, the United States is full of NHL teams from coast to coast. Or should I say, from the LA Kings to the New York Rangers.

Although you may be someone who has already dismissed the sport and you refuse to watch it out of stubbornness, I have come up with several awesome reasons why you should learn to love hockey:

Summer is hot. Hockey is cold.

This summer, I think we have all seen a dramatic rise in temperatures across the country. Since it’s in the upper 90’s for the majority of the day, why not catch a break by cooling off in a nice 58-degree arena? I can’t think of any better way to beat the heat without cranking my A/C down and subsequently sending my monthly bills through the roof.

There are fights.

One of the biggest attractions of hockey is the fights. The players fight, and occasionally the fans fight. We have all played a sport, been really mad at the other team and wished we could give them what they deserve. Well, in hockey, you can! Plus, it’s extra amusing to watch grown men swing at each other while wearing hockey pads.

The season is long.

The normal hockey season lasts from September until April. And if that isn’t enough hockey for you, the playoffs start after the regular season and run until June. If your team doesn’t make the playoffs, don’t worry — you can always keep track of your favorite players in the IIHF World Championship.

See, there are plenty of reasons to become a die-hard hockey fan here in Texas. Especially in Dallas since we have an NHL team right around the corner: the Dallas Stars. I’m only asking you to give it a (slap) shot. Get it!? You would if you watched hockey.
